The department of Geography was established in 2006. For the last 18 years this department has been offering General and Multidisciplinary courses for the students. At present there are five different courses offered by the department. These are Core Courses (CC), Minor Courses (MI), Interdisciplinary Courses (IDC), Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) and Discipline Specific Elective Courses (DSC/ DSE). The Department is well equipped with ICT based smart classrooms and all the major practical instruments for hands on training for the students. The department has a good variety of rocks and minerals samples, all major weather checking instruments, survey instruments, noise level checking instruments etc. The department provides all the necessary stationary goods to its students for free to conduct the practical works. Every year at least one field visit, one national or international seminar and two to three survey-based studies are conducted by the department of geography. The departmental students have submitted various research projects based on the local areas like demographic and economic mapping of Kidderpore locality, Crime mapping in Kidderpore area, Heritage site mapping in Kidderpore locality, Noise Pollution level mapping in Kidderpore area and so on. We are continuously trying to upgrade the standard of the departmental activities and involve students to apply their geographical expertise to generate knowledge of the local areas from different perspectives.
The Geography lab consists of multiple survey instruments like Prismatic Compass, Dumpy Level, Measuring Staff, Distometer, Clinometer, Brunton Compass, Planimeter etc, weather phenomena measuring instruments like Maximum and Minimum Thermometer, Wet and Dry Bulb Thermometer, Fortin Barometer, Rain Gauge, Wind Vane, Anemometer; Sound level meter for measuring noise pollution level, 20 mineral and rock specimens, decent number of satellite images, aerial photographs and stereoscopes, topographical maps and all other required practical instruments. The departmental lab is a student friendly zone where all required practical equipment is given to the needy students like Drawing Pages, Colours, Rotring Pens, Scales, Protractor, Compass etc. The lab also has eight large tracing tables so that students can easily trace and draw important diagrams. It is the basic objective of the department to provide the needy students all required practical instruments so that they can continue their practical works without any hindrances.
